3.
Hiking
-
Elandsberg. The
Elandsberg (2128m) trial takes you all the way to
You can ascend the mountain from the western or eastern side. Walk/drive out
on the Waterkloof road for about 4km and turn left at the Elandsberg sign.
You will cross a shallow riverbed just as
you turn left. Follow this road for about 1km. The road meanders around a
small hill. Please note that the road has huge bumps on it - it is not recommended
that you drive out there using a low vehicle like a sedan.
You'll arrive at a wooden structure with a thatched roof. Decide whether you're
going to go west or east.
If you look to your right (east), you will see the eastern trial zigzagging
up the mountain.
-
Towerkop. The
Towerkop trial takes you close to the base of the
Towerkop Pinnacles (2189m) and can be completed in a day if you
are fit. It is recommended however that you stay the night. There is
a (very shabby!) hut halfway up the mountain where you can spend
the night. The trail continues to a small cave which is located at the
front of Towerkop. It contains fresh water and you can spend the
night.
As you exit the cave and face the town, walk to your right, around the
boulders. You'll find a steep set of rocks which you can ascend to get
a better view of the Pinnacles. Please note that the cave is located
approximately level with the BASE of the Pinnacles.
It is possible to ascend the Pinnacles with proper climbing gear and
many have done so. WARNING:
It is nearly impossible to reach the
top of the Pinnacles without climbing gear and should NOT be attemp-
ted by inexperienced climbers. Also, if you haven't been up Towerkop
before, please take the elements into account. The weather can turn
cold and misty quickly, even in summer and you should be prepared
for a cold night. And remember that thunderstorms are common
during the summer.
You need to get in touch with La Grange Volschenk (+27 28 551 2037)
if you plan on climbing Towerkop. He needs to know the size of your
party and how long you intend to stay on the mountain.
-
Towersig. The
Towersig trial can be completed within a few hours. It takes you around a
few of the hills surrounding Ladismith. Walk/drive up to the Alan Blyth Hospital
(northern side of the town). Just as you are about to turn right into the
hospital grounds, you will see the Towersig sign in front of you. There is
a picture of the sign at the top of this page.
